In 1982, I traveled out into the empty western plains to visit an old friend who was teaching on the Lakota reservation in St. Francis, South Dakota. I was so taken with the faces of his pupils that I set up a simple studio and photographed every kid in the school. Later, I sent them all their photos - a large package. As a result, I was later introduced to a number of Lakota elders on the St. Francis reservation, including the medicine man, Stanley Redbird, whose photos are here also.
